Why should we store our immune cells?

Because our immune function begins to decline after young adults, the ability to identify pathogens or cancer cells weakens with age. When the immune system cannot recognize pathogens, it cannot eliminate them, and we become prone to infections.

If we have preserved our healthy immune cells in advance, we may have another opportunity to fight diseases in the future.

Why should we store our peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC)?

For clinical use and a promising future possibility in regenerative medicine.

At present, PBSC transplantation has surpassed bone marrow and umbilical cord blood stem cells as the most preferred option. PBSC can be used in patients with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, or cancers sensitive to chemoradiotherapy. It can be said that it is a very important medical resource.

In addition to disease treatment, the application of stem cells in regenerative medicine is also thriving.

How long can the cells be stored?

Biological and chemical reactions in living cells are dramatically reduced at low temperature, which leads to the possible long-term preservation of cells. Currently, cells can be preserved at the temperature -20℃, -80℃, and-196℃. According to the storing temperature, the suggested storage time will be different. The lower the temperature, the longer the storage time. In addition, the storing environment should always keep in a narrow range of low temperature, otherwise it might damage the cells.

Retain Biotech uses liquid nitrogen (-196°C) auto-filling tank and a 24-hour temperature monitoring online system to ensure the quality of our customers’ cells.

How much time is needed for cell collection?

Immune cells collection: 2~3 hours, by leukapheresis.

Peripheral blood stem cells collection: 5~6 hours, by leukapheresis.

Why do I have to receive G-CSF injections to collect my peripheral blood stem cells? Will there be any side effects?

(1) Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a hematopoietic stem cell growth factor, which promotes hematopoietic stem cells production and push theses stem cells to leave bone marrow, that is injected for five consecutive days, then we can collect them in the peripheral blood during the cell collection day by leukapheresis.

(2) Side effects: 30% people will have cold-like symptoms, such as light headaches, slight fatigue, and mild fever. Only 10%~20% people need to take painkillers to relieve their discomfort. Our physician team will keep in touch with you and help you relieve all your discomfort. After cell collection, all these symptoms will disappear within about 2 days.

Can I store cells when I have a cold?

Your health condition will be evaluated prior to cell collection. We will arrange a blood test to determine if your physical condition is suitable for cell storage. If your body is currently suffering from cold or inflammation, it means that your cells might be overreacted or damaged at that time. For the concern of cell quality, our physician team advise you to wait until you recover, then we will arrange your collection date.

I am 65 years old now, can I still store my immune cells?

Anyone who is healthy and over 18 years old are welcomed to store their immune cells. Your health condition will be evaluated prior to cell collection, we will arrange a pre-preservation health evaluation for you; our physician team will give you the final answer.

The number, quality and functions of immune cells will decrease with age. It is recommended that you store your healthy cells as soon as possible. The earlier you store your healthy cells, the better the cells will be.

What is the recommended age for cell storage?

Retain Biotech recommends the following ages for different cells’ collection and storage.

Immune cells: Anyone over 18 years old.

Peripheral blood stem cells: 18 to 65 years old.

Your health condition will be evaluated prior to cell collection, we will arrange a pre-preservation health evaluation for you; our physician team will determine whether you can store your cells or not. We provide you a personalized service and counseling. Each one of you is our VIP.

How much blood will I lose during cell collections? Will I lose too much blood?

The total blood loss is about 100~120ml (the minimum blood donation volume for women is 250ml, which is only 5~6% of the total blood volume), and the bone marrow will accelerate the speed of hematopoiesis and produce new blood cells soon. Therefore, such blood loss does not harm a healthy person. During the whole cell collection process, physicians, nurses and medical technologists will monitor your physical conditions to ensure your safety.

Will my immune function deteriorate after immune cells collection? Will I get sick easily?

After collecting immune cells by leukapheresis, the number of immune cells in our body will only decrease by less than 1%. Most immune cells are located in tissues and organs, rather than peripheral blood. As a result, taking away this small number of immune cells will not affect our immune function. Our body will soon replenish the lost immune cells.

There are many ways to strengthen our immune function, why should we spend so much money to store our immune cells?

Maybe we can maintain or enhance our immunity by healthy life style, exercise, and nutritious food; they are important to our health. However, these external efforts still cannot resist the aging of the immune system.

It is our mission to help you store your high-quality and healthy immune cells, and use them to fight diseases in the future.

Since medical technology is always improving, why can’t I just wait till I’m sick? Why should I store my cells right now?

Cancer cells will create a microenvironment that affects our immune cells. Thus, if immune cells are collected under unhealthy condition, they cannot perform as good as collected when healthy. That is the reason why we strongly recommend you to store your healthy cells in advance.

Is there a limit on the number of times to store cells?

Immune cells can be stored several times during a person's lifetime. The number of immune cells in the peripheral blood accounts for only about 1% of the whole immune cells in our body. By leukapheresis, we can separate a small number of immune cells from the blood without affecting the function of immune system. Our body will soon replenish the lost immune cells, so we can re-store them after a 3-month interval.

How can I use my preserved cells in the future?

Immune cells have the potentiality to be used as an auxiliary therapy for cancer treatment.

Peripheral blood stem cells can be used in peripheral blood stem cell transplantation and regenerative medicine.

If you need any help, please discuss details with your physicians, and follow the physician’s treatment guide and advice.
