Immune Cells Storage

What are immune cells?

The human body's immune system is responsible for preventing pathogens (such as bacteria and viruses) attacking the human body, eliminating them, and remembering the characteristics of these pathogens. When the immune system faces the same pathogen next time, the immune system can quickly identify and initiate the elimination process.

Immune cells clear not only pathogens but also cancer cells, they are the defenders of human body.

Common immune cells

Natural Killer cells

Natural Killer cells (NK cells) belong to the innate immune system. They have the ability to recognize and directly kill stressed abnormal cells, allowing for a much faster immune reaction.

T cells

T cells attack specific cells only, and they also have the ability to regulate immune reactions. Through cell culture or gene engineering, we can produce massive active T cells targeting specific cancer cells.

B cells

B cells produce antibodies. Antibodies bind to specific antigens on the surface of pathogens, then the complex will be cleared by other immune cells.

Why do we need to store immune cells?

Younger immune cells have better activity

When we are young, we have more diverse and differentiable immune cells. These immune cells play an extremely important role in defending against disease threats. From the moment we born, our immune system begins to develop and mature, and it reaches its peak of maturity around the age of 18. However, our immune function begins to slowly decline with age after young adults. At the age of 70s or 80s, due to the deterioration of immune function, the ability to distinguish and eliminate abnormal cells, we become prone to infections and have higher chance to get cancer. If we can preserve our healthy immune cells in advance, we may have the opportunity to use them in the future.

Future applications of immune cells

The main functions of immune cells are eliminating foreign substances that invade the body and regulating immune function in the body. In the future, we might be able to direct these preserved immune cells to attack specific cancer cells. At present, the medical and biotechnology fields are constantly researching the use of immune cells as an auxiliary therapy for cancer treatment.

Taiwan has also opened the use of autologous immune cells in the treatment of leukemia, lymphoma, malignant melanoma, etc.
